Khulekani Msweli
Khulekani Msweli was born in Vuvulane, Eswatini, in 1984. Spent most of his early years of primary and high school education in Eswatini, then lived and acquired higher education in England, reading art and fashion design at Southport College and at Manchester Metropolitan University. Msweli has travelled extensively within Europe, USA, The Middle East and Africa. He is also a Mandela Washington Fellow. Msweli focuses primarily on contemporary art installations, sculptures, and photography. He draws inspiration from the world around him – current affairs, social issues, and artwork of all mediums – and is especially interested in portraying the ever-present dichotomy between ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’. He has developed an interesting way of combining materials, through his design and proportion (necessary for his fashion), which influence his work in visual arts. He is unique in his ability to explore the bridge between ancient and modern thought processes, rituals, styles, and cultures – a dichotomy which is especially relevant in Eswatini. Msweli currently lives and works in his hometown of Vuvulane, in Eswatini. When not creating art, Msweli directs his design business, JEREMPAUL, and his restaurant, Vuvulane Food Market.
